Built around 1200 by Konrad von Boppard, the castle is located high above the Ehrbachklamm gorge. From here, the view stretches across the valley to the ruins of Rauschenburg Castle. In 1910, the painter Wilhelm Steinhausen acquired the castle and used it as a summer residence for his family. Here he created countless landscape paintings and portraits.
Since 1924, Schöneck has been owned by the Wilhelm and Ida Steinhausen Foundation and is used by family members.
